MATH Course Sequencing

The following is the appropriate sequence for math courses:
Physical Science and Engineering Majors:

  • MATH 5 --> MATH 21 -->  MATH 22 --> MATH 23 and/or 24 --> MATH 32

Biological Sciences and SSHA Majors:  

  • MATH 5 -->MATH 11 --> MATH 12

Switching Between Tracks

Switching between tracks is not encouraged. Students from any major may take Math 21 with advisor approval provided they demonstrate educational need for MATH 21 and 22, such as the desire to change to a major or minor that requires those courses.
Students who successfully complete MATH 11 and 12 and need to continue on in coursework requiring MATH 22 as a course requisite will need to pass a MATH 22 Competency Exam or may enroll in MATH 22. If MATH 22 is successfully completed the grade for MATH 22 will replace the grade for MATH 12 and the student will only receive grade points and units for MATH 22.

Students who wish to switch from MATH 11 to MATH 22 will need to pass a MATH 21 Competency Exam or may enroll in MATH 21. If MATH 21 is successfully completed the grade for MATH 21 will replace the grade for MATH 11 and the student will only receive grade points and units for MATH 21.
School of Natural Sciences Student Services will notify students and their respective advisors of the outcome of the Competency Exam, place the necessary overrides, and record the exam results in SOATEST.

  • Score of 0 = Competency Exam not passed
  • Score of 1 = Competency Exam passed

Information for Advisors

Students will need multiple overrides to enroll in MATH 21 after successfully completing MATH 11 or in MATH 22 after successfully completing MATH 12.  Please use MUTUAL, REPEAT, and/or MAJOR in some cases.  Please note the grade points and units from the first course will be removed from the student’s record, but the grade assigned at each enrollment shall be permanently recorded. Students pursuing this option elect to nullify units from a previous semester and need to be advised and understand the potential implications to their time to degree and financial aid.

For students in declared majors that exclude them from enrollment in MATH 21/22, advisors may authorize enrollment in the appropriate course at their discretion, assuming the student has an educational need for the course.

Examples:

  • An ECON major who would like to pursue a minor in MATH can be approved to enroll in MATH 21 (override: MAJOR)
  • A BIOE major who intends to change to BIO can be approved to enroll in MATH 11 (override: MAJOR)
  • An UND students who plans to pursue the MSE major can be approved to enroll in MATH 21 (override: MAJOR)
  • A BIO student who plans to pursue an engineering major can be approved to enroll in MATH 022 upon completion of MATH 011 with AP credit Calculus AB (score of 4 or 5) without taking the MATH 021 competency exam (override: PREREQ)

For students switching from the physical science/engineering track (MATH 21/22) to the BIO/SSHA track tracks, students are able to change fairly easily.  The CRF for MATH 12 allows those students who have completed MATH 21 successfully to enroll.  However, an advisor will need to place a MAJOR override.  

Examples:

  • A CHEM major who intends to change to BIO and has passed MATH 21 can be approved to enroll in MATH 12 (override MAJOR)
  • Students who would like to change from the BIO/SSHA track to the physical science/engineering track either with or without taking the Competency Exam will need to be advised of their options by an advisor.  
  • A COGS BS student who has passed MATH 12 but wants to take MATH 22 so they can minor in PHYS (overrides: MAJOR, MUTUAL, PREREQ)*
    *this student would have the option to take the MATH 22 Competency Exam, but they are not required to do so if they would rather take MATH 22 instead.
  • A student passes MATH 011 and 012, takes the MATH 022 competency exam and does not pass it.  However, the student would like to enroll in PHYS 008 which requires MATH 021. (override: PREREQ).  PHYS faculty are okay with students taking PHYS 008 and MATH 022 concurrently.
