Role of Advising in Academic Success

Role of Academic Advising in Academic Success

Every student at UC Merced has an assigned academic advisor.  Academic advisors are here to provide guidance and support to students for their academic success.  Meeting with advisors during walk-in or appointments offers students an opportunity to create connections with their advisor and have meaningful discussions about career interests or academic goals. Some topics that can be discussed include: schedule planning, career interests, choosing a major or a minor, and campus resources to support personal, academic, and career goals.

Tip: Get the most out of your advising meeting

Students should come prepared to an advising appointment or walk-in hours with specific questions.  This will ensure the student gets the most out of meetings with their advisor.  Questions can include a variety of different topics.

General questions can include:

  • Can I graduate on time with my major of choice?
  • What are some resources that I could use if I'm struggling academically?
  • What are some opportunities that can help me make the most of my college experience?
  • What is the best way to plan my course schedule based on my academic goals?

Some questions specifically for transfer students could include:

  • How do my previous college courses count at UC Merced?
  • How can I find success at UC Merced and make the most of my college experience?
  • What are some resources offered to transfer students on campus?

Tip: Take notes during your meeting

Taking notes during your advising session is a good way to refer to them later.  A lot of information is discussed during your meeting, so taking notes will make sure you don't forget important topics discussed.  Notes will allow you to keep track of important deadlines mentioned by your advisor or any important websites or resources offered to students.
